Cardi B Hesitates to Discuss ‘Life Changes’ in New Music: ‘People Use My Pаin Against Me’
Cardi B, the “Bodak Yellow” rapper, recently opened up about her reluctance to address personal and political topics in her music, citing how public drаmа has impacted her willingness to share.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Cardi B candidly explained why she’s hesitant to delve into her personal life in her new music. “I really want to talk about the life changes that I’ve been dealing with the past six, seven years,” she said. “But then it’s just like, I feel like people don’t deserve to know because people use my pаin against me.”
Cardi’s personal life has frequently been in the spotlight. In several December 2023 Instagram Live sessions, she vented about her relationship with Offset, her husband since September 2017, and revealed they had split, stating, “I had been single for a minute now.” Despite their turbulent relationship, the couple, who share two children, were recently seen holding hands at a post-Met Gala party.
The rapper’s public disputes have made her more cautious. Following her December video, Nicki Minaj posted a meme that many interpreted as mocking Cardi’s feelings about her husband. This led to a backlash from Minaj’s fans when Cardi appeared to retaliate on social media.
“I’m a lonely sufferer,” Cardi confessed to Rolling Stone, explaining her decision to keep more to herself. She finds solace in staying home and avoiding the public eye. “When I was off social media and nobody knew what I was doing, I was at peace a lot. But what am I going to do? Never post or never work again because that’s peace? No,” she stated. “I don’t ever want my daughter or my son to give up on something because they can’t take the pressure of what people sаy about them. I got to set that example. It’s like, ‘Y’all never going to break me.’ Because I got something to prove to myself. I also got to prove something to the haters. I’ve got to prove it to my own kids.”
Despite her outspoken history on personal and political issues, Cardi has become wary of the backlash. In a March interview on Complex’s 360 with Speedy, she admitted feeling “afraid” of negаtive feedback over the past year. “I just feel like I lost myself with everything… people just be like, ‘She’s afraid to drop an album, she’s afraid to drop music,'” she said. In 2023, she only released one single, “Bongos,” featuring Megan Thee Stallion, and announced she wouldn’t be dropping her sophomore album this year.
“I was afraid to go live, I was afraid to post a picture, I was afraid to go to the club,” she admitted. “I love talking about politics and everything. I don’t even want to talk about it anymore because I’m just so afraid of just getting dragged every single f—ing day. Like, I’m tired.”
