Cardi B honors hip-hop legends in her music video for ‘Like What’
Cardi B’s latest music video for “Like What (Freestyle)” not only showcases her talent but also pays homage to the influential wоmen who paved the way in hip-hop before her.
Released on Friday to the surprise of fans, the track and its accompanying video, directed by her husband Offset, feature nods to some of the leading figures in the genre.
Sampling Missy Elliott’s iconic track “She’s a BitcҺ” from her 1999 album “Da Real World,” Cardi B acknowledges Elliott’s impact on the rap scene. In a visual tribute, Cardi B dons crystal-encrusted eyebrows, reminiscent of a look Elliott famously sported during her career peak.
Additionally, Cardi B pays homage to another pioneer, Lil’ Kim, in the video. Sporting a floor-grazing printed fur coat and revealing bikini ensemble, Cardi’s look echoes one worn by Lil’ Kim in her 2003 video for “Came Back for You.”
This dual tribute to Missy Elliott and Lil’ Kim isn’t merely a nostalgic gesture. Both artists have left an indelible mark on hip-hop, fashion, and beauty, much like Cardi B has achieved since bursting onto the scene with “Bodak Yellow” in 2018. Known for her bold fashion choices showcased at events like the Met Gala and Paris Fashion Week, Cardi B’s influence continues to grow.
Fans have eagerly awaited Cardi B’s sophomore album following her Grammy-winning debut, “Invasion of Privacy.” With this latest release, Cardi B affirms her dominance in the rap game and assures her audience that the wait for her new music will be well worth it.
