Banks, recognized on Variety’s 2021 Hitmakers of the Year list, delves into the fascinating stories behind some of her notable collaborations.
Saweetie’s hit “Best Friend” became a standout moment in Banks’ career. The song initially started as a collaboration between Saweetie and Doja Cat, but when Doja Cat decided against it, Banks rewrote the verses for Saweetie. Notably, a specific line in the song sparked initial hesitation from Saweetie, who questioned the mention of a “Tessie” (a grandma’s car). Banks convinced her of the line’s appeal, and it turned out to be a defining element of the song.
Reflecting on her diverse experiences, Banks recalls her unexpected collaboration with Jodeci in 2014/2015. Initially meant to write for Mila J, Banks found herself on the song, “Sho Out,” marking a pivotal moment in her career.
Discussing her collaboration with Saweetie, Banks highlights the rapper’s fun and meticulous approach to recording. Saweetie’s sessions are characterized by a personalized and grand atmosphere, with even details like blue thongs contributing to a certain aesthetic.
Banks opens up about her emotionally charged song “Deadbeat Dad,” where she candidly addresses her relationship with her father. The unique production inspired her to explore these emotions, resulting in a powerful and personal track.
Looking ahead, Banks shares details about her upcoming debut EP, set to release in spring, titled “Rose Water.” The EP will showcase different facets of her artistry, including a mix of sassy and lover-girl vibes. She plans to release a second EP in the fall, with each EP featuring six songs.
In addition to her solo projects, Banks teases collaborations with other artists and a forthcoming show. Excited about venturing into the fashion world, she plans to launch her first merch line. As her career continues to flourish, Banks is optimistic about potential festival performances, including a potential appearance at South By Southwest.
