Jay-Z’s birthday could become an annual New York City holiday

In his hometown, Jay-Z’s birthday might soon be celebrated more lavishly than before.

According to ABC 7 New York, legislation to declare December 4th, the birthday of the renowned Brooklyn-bred rapper, as a holiday known as “Jay-Z Day” was proposed earlier this month by New York City Councilmembers.

During the resolution hearing, Councilwoman Farah Louis stated, “The global phenomenon that is Jay-Z—born Shawn Carter—is widely known as an artist, mogul, husband and father, wealth builder, and supporter of economic development and community causes.”

“Jay-Z Day announces to the world on December 4 how this Brooklyn son can be all things, including loved by his community,” she went on. It is appropriate to declare our civic support for a homegrown hero and launch an annual festival in honor of Hip Hop’s 50th anniversary.

UPROXX reports that the resolution has been forwarded to the Committee on Cultural Affairs, Libraries, and International Intergroup Relations. It will be debated during the City Council’s 2024 session, which starts on January 3, after it is filed with the council.

A few days before Christmas, and a few weeks after turning 54, Hov was photographed in a NYC tour van with his daughter Blue Ivy, wife Beyoncé, and other friends and family.
